Startup Weekend EDU Miami

Startup Weekend EDU Miami 2014 took place at Venture Hive from October 10th through the 12th. The weekend long event encouraged individuals from different backgrounds but common interests in improving education to form teams and build a startup that would help transform and improve the education industry. During our event, 32 individuals participated, 6 teams were formed, and 2 teams were chosen as winners.

Our expert judging panel, comprised of four amazing judges (Roberto Interiano-Executive Director of MEDO, Partner at STS Latin America and previously on the Advisory Board at One Laptop Per Child, Thomas Wenrich-was the the founding CFO/COO of Open English and currently an angel investor, consultant and mentor at Venture Hive, Serge Elkiner-CEO and Co-founder of Yellow Pepper, and Maxeme Tuchman-Executive Director of Teach for America Miami) chose Distillit and Miss Less as our first and second place winners.

Distillit created a fun, simple system that allows teachers to filter through the millions of edtech resources available and find the tech tools that will have the greatest impact in their classrooms.

Miss Less created a platform that helps sick children say up-to-date with schoolwork using android technology that turns any TV into a live or recorded video feed of the classroom.

The evaluations were based on customer validation, product execution, user experience design, and educational impact. Teams had 5 minutes to pitch and 3 minutes to answer questions. Distillit, winners of SWEDU Miami,  won one month of mentoring from Venture Hive, a free Platinum Pass to WebCongress Miami, a full day of training at the W Academy, and a Rawshorts Cloud Based Video Builder License. Second place winners, Miss Less, will receive a month of training from Venture Hive to propel their idea to the next level.
