Miami – Venture Hive Blog https://blog.venturehive.com Wed, 04 Jan 2017 15:59:47 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.1.18 Manage Your Time with OKRs https://blog.venturehive.com/manage-time-okrs/ Wed, 04 Jan 2017 15:55:39 +0000 https://blog.venturehive.com/?p=852 Welcome to part 2 of how to reach your goals (check out part 1 here).

As entrepreneurs we face the challenge of managing our time and deciding what to work on. “Objectives and Key Results” (OKRs) are a way of setting our goals and focusing on tasks that deliver the best results.

Anatomy of an OKR:

  1. Objective: What’s the goal and what’s the timeline?
  2. Key Results: How will we measure completion of our goal?
  3. Key Actions: What steps will we take towards our goal every day / week / month?

OKR Example:

Objective: Launch minimum viable product (MVP) in 3 months

Key Result 1: Spec out MVP — Month 1

  • Key Action 1: Hold 25 problem interviews with potential customers — Week 1 & 2
  • Key Action 2: Design a mock-up and hold 25 solution interviews and validate pricing with potential customers — Week 3 & 4

Key Result 2: Develop and deploy 5 key features — Month 2

  • Key Action 1: Run two-week sprints — Month 2

Key Result 3: Test and fix bugs — Month 3

  • Key Action 1: Run 5 in-person testing sessions — 2 weeks
  • Key Action 2: Run one-week sprints starting — Month 3

How do we set our objectives? Aiming low delivers poor results. Failing at a 10% goal may mean only 5% growth.

So aim high! One strategy is to set your goals so that you have to stretch to reach 70%. This forces you to go beyond your comfort zone. If you hit 100% then you’ve set your goals too low. And if you only hit 40% then you’ve set your goals too high.

But this leads to the uncomfortable situation where people regularly miss their goals. You may want to include a few that you can crush—because no one wants to be a “C” student all the time.

Nick Ushkoff recommends:

“Stretch for some goals, but keep some within reach. No employee would be satisfied with getting a 70% all the time; that’s why you need to balance your ambitious OKRs with [achievable] ones.”

Also consider using “the 10x Rule:” what if you have to do ten times your current revenue in the next three months? You’d be forced to re-evaluate all of your assumptions. Aiming this high can have a dramatic effect on growth.

Failing at 10x might mean a 2x or 3x improvement, while failing at a 10% goal might mean only improving 5%.

Be careful of the “Wells Fargo effect,” where people are incentivized to break the law in order to hit objectives. And some metrics don’t work well for stretch goals. Setting an aggressive cost cutting goal, for example, may force you to reduce product quality below what your customers will tolerate.

OKRs can cascade throughout an organization. Google has overarching objectives, supported by each division’s objectives, which are in turn supported by each employee’s objectives. Google, each division, and each employee all have key results that support these metrics. Everything is transparent so colleagues can look up each others’ OKRs. They quickly see how they can help, reducing wasted effort. And teammates have the perfect excuse to refuse to take on side projects—because they would be a distraction.

Suggestions for teams are to set the proper expectations, and to not use a 70% outcome against someone in a performance review.

Another OKR Example:

Objective: Sign first B2B customer in 3 months

Key Result 1: Prep sales materials — Weeks 1 & 2

  • Key Action 1: Draft phone and email scripts — Weeks 1 & 2
  • Key Action 2: Draft website — Weeks 1 & 2
  • Key Action 3: Set up CRM — Weeks 1 & 2

Key Result 2: Give 2 product demos per week to potential customers — Months 1–3

  • Key Action 1: Reach out to 25 prospects per week via email/phone — Weeks 3–10
  • Key Action 2: Speak at 1 industry event per month

Setting Goals with OKRs https://blog.venturehive.com/set-goals-okrs/ Tue, 20 Dec 2016 18:39:26 +0000 https://blog.venturehive.com/?p=851
Entrepreneurs are always looking for ways to manage their time and achieve their goals, and here’s how to do it with OKRs.

“OKR stands for Objectives and Key Results. It is a method of defining and tracking progress towards objectives. Its main goal is to connect company, team, and personal objectives to measurable results, making people move together in the right direction.”  — Wikipedia

OKRs were pioneered by Intel and are the lifeblood of how Google and other successful businesses operate. Here’s the basic idea:

Objectives are our big goals that define where you’re headed.

  • For best results make them measurable
  • Set a time limit, usually 90 days
  • Only work on a few at a time

Key Results are the metrics we need to hit in order to achieve our objectives:

  • Quantifiable, measurable, and time-bound outcomes
  • Set these aggressively, so that you achieve either around 70% or 10x.

Key Actions are specific activities that you will take in order to achieve your key results.

  • These should also be measurable and time-bound
  • Daily, weekly, and monthly activities needed to hit your Key Results metrics
  • Be ready to change these if they’re not working—you have 90 days to figure it out

The magic here is how quickly we can map out where we want to be and how to measure progress. Now we can filter all of our possible activities for the next 90 days by whether or not they’re helping us achieve our objective. If an activity isn’t moving us closer to our goal then maybe we should skip it.

OKR Example:

Objective: Quit my day job in 3 months

Key Result 1: Raise $25k in friends and family money in 3 months

  • Key Action #1: Sketch out a lean canvas and run it past 5 advisors – Week 1 & 2
  • Key Action #2: Put together a pitch deck – Week 3 & 4
  • Key Action #3: Meet with at least 2 potential investors per week until we’re funded – Week 5 – 12

Key Result 2: Find a technical co-founder in 3 months

  • Key Action #1: Join FounderDating + other business networking sites – Week 1
  • Key Action #2: Go to at least one tech meetup per week – 3 months
  • Key Action #3: Get at least 1 personal introduction per week – 3 months

Mobile Banking Is Now For Everyone with Waleteros Launch https://blog.venturehive.com/mobile-banking-needs-met-with-waleteros/ Wed, 24 Jun 2015 19:11:14 +0000 http://blog.venturehive.com/?p=694 waleteros logoWaleteros, the mobile banking app for the underbanked, has officially launched on Google Play. The Miami-based startup offers a way for the millions of people in the U.S. who don’t use or have a bank account – of which Hispanics represent a disproportionate percentage – to use their smartphones as their banking solution.

To meet their financial needs, underbanked consumers go to check cashing stores, where they pay hefty fees to cash their checks, pay their bills, and send money to their families. A study by Nielsen found that Latinos rely significantly on their smartphones for digital access and are adopting smartphones at a higher rate than any other demographic group. The company saw an opportunity to offer these banking services digitally.

After completing a short registration via the app, users receive a Prepaid Debit MasterCard with no monthly maintenance, minimum balance, or overdraft fees. The card can be used to make purchases in stores, online, and to withdraw money from a network of thousands of surcharge free ATMs. Through the app, users can keep track of their transactions, remote deposit checks, and send money instantly to other users for a small fee.

Waleteros, who participated in the 2014 Venture Hive Miami Accelerator class, plans to release an iOS version of their app next month. Unlike other platforms for the underbanked, Waleteros cuts out the middle-man making it seamless to perform traditional banking transactions, without the hassle of dealing with a bank.

“We are Latinos living in the U.S. and we wanted to find a way to send money for less than $10. And guess what… we did much better than that! Thanks to Waleteros, now anyone, regardless of whether you have a bank account or not, can send money instantly, anytime, anywhere for only 75 cents!” – Etienne Gillard, Co-founder of Waleteros
